The reason for EV City
Let me tell you a story...
On April 1st, 2019—yes, April Fool’s Day—I walked away from two decades of selling petrol and diesel cars and opened the doors to EV City. To start with there was no team. Just me, a yard, and one car: a Nissan Leaf. (That same Leaf has since returned to us twice—clearly it knows where home is.)
I’d spent years managing traditional dealerships, moving cars and crunching numbers, but something about the EV world felt different. EV buyers aren’t just ticking boxes—they’re curious, passionate, and actually interested in what they’re buying. And frankly, so was I. EVs aren’t just better for the environment—they’re just better cars, full stop.
I started EV City to sell better cars in a better way. No tricks, no pressure, no pushy pricks. Just honest advice, great service, and properly sorted electric vehicles backed by a team of people who give a damn. It sounds simple, but in the car industry, it’s weirdly rare.
It didn’t take long before I wasn’t alone. Old mates, trusted colleagues, and fellow EV geeks started coming on board. Now we’ve got a tight team of five, each one bringing something a little different—but all sharing the same obsession with customer service. Not just saying the customer comes first—we actually live it. Our country-leading reviews and BuyerScore awards didn’t come from a fancy showroom or slick marketing. They came from real people having real conversations, and driving away in something they love.
We’re proud to support the shift away from imported fossil fuels and toward New Zealand’s renewable energy future. But more than that, we’re proud to be part of a movement where people genuinely care—about what they drive, where it comes from, and who they buy it from.
Whether you’re EV curious or EV converted, you’re welcome here. Ask us anything. Take one for a drive. Bring your mate who still thinks EVs are golf carts. We’ll sort you out.
