If you're looking for a family car that does almost everything brilliantly, the 2023 Tesla Model Y is a very hard car to beat.
And here's why.
Firstly, the space. The Model Y is quite possibly one of the most practical vehicles on the market. There's a massive boot, a huge compartment underneath it, a front boot (or frunk), clever storage throughout the cabin and enough room for the family and all the stuff they insist on bringing everywhere. Honestly, if you can't fit it in a Model Y, you probably don't need it.
Then there's the technology. Tesla's Premium Audio system with 13 speakers, a subwoofer and immersive sound is genuinely impressive. Add the huge central touchscreen, panoramic glass roof, heated seats and heated steering wheel, and it's a pretty comfortable place to spend your time.
But the real party trick is the Tesla app. Use your phone as the key, preheat or cool the cabin before getting in, check your charging, locate the car or activate Dog Mode and Camp Mode. Once you've experienced how well the car and phone work together, conventional car keys start to feel rather old fashioned.
On the road, Tesla's Basic Autopilot is included at no additional cost. This gives you Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer, helping with speed, following distance and steering on suitable roads while you remain in control. There's no need to pay extra for these useful driver assistance features.
Expect roughly 330 to 400km of real world range depending on conditions, making it ideal for daily driving and perfectly capable of longer journeys.
And when you do head away, you've got access to Tesla's excellent Supercharger network, with charging stops planned automatically through the navigation system. Road trips really don't get much easier.
This particular Model Y also comes with a full set of all weather floor mats and a matching boot liner. A very welcome addition if you've got children, dogs, muddy shoes or all three.
